It was party night for the youths at the campsite! Our brave American tried to get them to stop a few times apparently but I missed those bits of the night. It seemed the local police had been in and out a bit as.well.
The trouble with the early start was that we had to upset someone turning the truck around to leave. It was decided that to be fair the ones most affected should be the trouble makers. There was a little less room there so the truck had to go close to the tent, but at least it spared the other campers who needed their sleep 😇
we started off with more waterfalls! There are everywhere in Iceland. This was different though, the biggest waterfall on Europe and its little sister.
Dettifoss is fed by the powerful glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum which flows from the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The thunderous fall has an average water flow of 193 meters cubed per second (6,186 cubic feet). It is 100 meters (330 feet) wide and plummets 45 meters (150 feet) down into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.
This canyon is in the northern part of the greater Vatnajökull National Park, the largest national park in the country, thus Dettifoss is well protected.
Also within this canyon, fed by the river of Jökulsá á Fjöllum, are two more impressive waterfalls, Selfoss

Then we went into the Highlands,
The Central Highlands
The Central Highlands cover a vast area, at an altitude of over 500 metres (1640 feet), with numerous mountains reaching heights between 1,000 and 2,000 metres (3,281 and 6562 feet). Most of these higher mountains are covered by glaciers.
they are a different world. All F roads where you get a massive fine for taking a vehicle in which isn’t up to the job. In fact we got stopped by a ranger not far in to check that ee knew the rules and were up to the job.

The landscape changed to black ash and volcanos. We drove through a moon or possibly Martian landscape getting an interesting rocky ride as the road looped up and down around and over rocks.
River crossing were through ford’s with warning signs up. We all got excited about this new experience. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to stop the truck for photos !
All day we could see “Queen of the mountains” we had a great view from the campsite.

The campground was a idyllic haven in this landscape. Streams and waterfalls and greenery.
