Iceland Day 12 – on to Seydisfjordur

We went first to the ice caves, this was planned for yesterday, but we ran out of time. This glacier like all the glaciers in Iceland is retreating. Not being one of the first of the bus, I folllowed the earlier group up a slope and saw the beging of a trail. Off I set with a few others for a long walk.

After a bit we saw a sign saying 1973. A while later one saying 2019, finally we came to the glacier in its 2023 position; and no ice cave! We mouched around a bit and then headed back disappointed at the lack of cave and attributing it to the receeding glacier.

When we returned we found that we had headed off in the WRONG diection! the ice cave was a rather shorter walk in a different direction. We were only given time to go and take a quick photo as we were already late. In any case we couldn’t have gone too close due to the risk of falling ice chunks and a previous cave in.

We had the excitement of another ford on the way back. This time we did a quick stop for photos first. Unfortuately to get photos we would have had to paddle over after the truck. No one seemed too keen though.

Seydisfjordur, a picturesque little town in eastern Iceland situated at the end of a fjord surrounded by steep mountains. The town is a step back in time and is crammed with 19th century timber buildings, quaint coffee shops and traditional restaurants.
