We had our late start today – suprising how exciting that was – a leisurely shower before breakfast even with me on cook duty, wow that was so exciting! The small things that matter.
As it was a late start and lots of time for preparing breakfast it was fried eggs. Now this is where my heart sank, cooking fried eggs isn’t my favorite. It didn’t start off well – they all broke. It didn’t matter how careful I was, what I tried – what a failure. Then suddenly they started to come out whole what a relief that I hadn’t ruined everyone’s day. I can safely say that I have never cooked 3 dozen eggs at one go before. It seemed to be a never ending stream of people after eggs. On the plus side – thay can’t have been too bad.
The big thing today was the glacier hike. It was marketed as easy to moderate. The hike wasn’t quite what any of us expected. After talking to the guides I found that this glacier like all the others is receeding and therefore the journey is different each year. Possibly what was easy a few years ago now needs a longer steeper hike in now. It certainly didn’t match up to the reviews, however, that said the possibility of doing the hike at all will end as the glacier retreats so we can consider ourslves lucky to be able to do it.
It was a long walk to the glacier face, then a steep zigzag trudge up to the top. It was much harder than I’d expected and I certainly couldn’t have kept up with the guides pace. Luckily I wasn’t the only one. We stopped near the top to put on our crampons before we got to the ice.
Once we got there it was beautiful and well worth the trip.

We found that the glacier changes by the hour. The guides need to be constantly alert to the changes and reassess the glacier every time the go up.
We all had a drink of pure glacier water from a stream on the glacier and I was fascinated by the water holes in the glacier
